Dog Licenses

Dog Licenses

The Hamilton Town Clerk's Office acts as the issuing agent of licenses for dogs in the town. All dogs require a license at the age of four (4) months. Dog licenses need to be renewed annually.

To license your dog(s), you will need:

  • Proof of Rabies Vaccination. (This is the Rabies Certificate, not the tag.)
  • Proof of Spay/Neuter if the animal has been altered. Either a certification from a licensed veterinarian or certificate from an animal shelter.
  • A completed Application for a Dog License. (Located in Forms.)

Licensing fees are:

  • $7.00 for a spayed or neutered dog (proof of spay/neuter is required)
  • $15.00 for a unspayed or unneutered dog.

The Process to License:

  1. Gather your documents and payment and bring them to the Town Office during regular business hours.
    1. If you don’t have the option to make copies of your rabies certificate or spay/neuter certificate, we will gladly do that for you.
  2. We will assign your dog a tag that needs to be on your dog at all times.
  3. Every year, we will send you a renewal reminder in the mail. Fees are the same.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Will I get a new tag for my dog every year?

No, your dog keeps the same tag upon licensing.

What if my dog gets lost?

Call our Dog Control Officer. Each dog tag has a unique number which we track in our dog licensing system that identifies that the dog belongs to you. If the dog is lost and someone finds the dog or the Dog Control Officer finds the dog, they will call us and we can reunite you and your dog.

What happens if I lose my dog tag?

Replacement tags are available for $3.00.

What happens if I find a lost or stray dog?

First, call the Town of Hamilton Dog Control Officer Carol Lawrence at 607-226-1858 or call the Town Office at 315-824-3380. Please be careful when handling a dog that is unknown to you and your family. Our goal is to reunite dogs with their families. You can also post on Social Media which is a good way to reach out. Please keep in mind that a family may be looking for their beloved dog, so calling the Town is the best way to increase the chance of reuniting them.
